13 nominees receive US Presidential Medal of Freedom

The US president Barack Obama awards the Presidential Medal of Freedom to thirteen recipients he named in late April.
Among the recipients of the medal are a music legend Bob Dylan, former US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, the President of Isreal, Shimon Peres, former officer in the Polish Underground during World War II and one of the first eye-witnesses of the Holocaust who spoke to the world, Jan Karski, and American novelist, Toni Morrison.
“These extraordinary honorees come from different backgrounds and different walks of life, but each of them has made a lasting contribution to the life of our Nation. They’ve challenged us, they’ve inspired us, and they’ve made the world a better place. I look forward to recognizing them with this award,” said Barack Obama.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the US. It is awarded to individuals who "have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors".
Since the Israeli President, Shimon Peres, will not attend the ceremony, the medal will be awarded to him on a separate occasion at the White House.
