Auschwitz bans football accessories during Euro 2012

The visitors to the former Nazi death camp, Auschwitz, are forbidden to bring in fan flags, scarves, 'vuvuzela' trumpets and banners during the Euro 2012 championship.
"We know that the emotions around athletic tournaments are quite strong and we'd prefer that these emotions not be part of visits to this place of memory," said the Auschwitz-Birkenau museum press officer, Pawel Sawicki.
The caretakers of the camp, in which more than a million people perished during the World War II, also decided to increase the usual safety measures at the museum to ensure that it is approached with appropriate respect.
