30th Anniversary of Falkland Islands surrender 2012
|
|
On 2 April 1982 Argentine forces invaded the Falkland Islands, a small British Overseas Territory some 300 miles from Argentina.
The UK sent a naval force and troops to reclaim the islands, succeeding on June 14. The short but intense war resulted in the death of 255 British and some 650 Argentine forces.
After almost three peaceable decades, the islands are once again the source of tension between the UK and Argentina. Argentina reasserts its claim to the islands and regards British drilling for oil in the surrounding waters as provocative.
Both the UK and Argentina will hold memorial services for the fallen soldiers.
