A letter written by French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in English is put on auction.
It is the first letter that the Emperor of the French wrote in English after his defeat and exile to the British island of St. Helena.
Napoleon learned English behind the back of his jailers, in order to be able to secretly understand their conversations.

"He was imprisoned by the English... and he wanted to continue to have a certain degree of independence, of freedom, and to be able to learn English without his jailers knowing it was a great motivation for him," Jean-Christophe Chataigner of the auction house Osenat explained Napoleon's sentiments about the English language.
The letter is expected to sell for around $100,000.
