Madrid stores are allowed to stay open 24 hours year-round as the authorities of the Community of Madrid de-regulate the stores' opening times. The measure was proposed by Esperanza Aguirre, President of Madrid and is aimed at stimulating commerce and increasing employment figures.
Apart from ways to manage a looming banking crisis, Spanish authorities need to find incentives to boost consumption as well. According to reports, the month of April has brought a record drop in Spain's retail sales.
The de-regulation of timetables has attracted mixed reactions from stakeholders and politicians. While its proponents hope the measure will help small shop owners, critics claim the large retail chains will end up being the real beneficiaries.
