Toronto bans use of plastic bags

Toronto becomes Canada's first major city to ban the use of plastic bags.
The ban, which was proposed by Councillor David Shiner, was approved by a majority vote in early June 2012.
The move was a surprise for Toronto's Mayor, Rob Ford, who was originally only seeking to bring down the plastic bag fee in stores. He called the proposal for the plastic bags ban the "dumbest thing [Toronto] council has done".
Plastic bag bans have already been implemented in Seattle, San Francisco and in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
