Falkland Islands hold referendum on whether to remain British

According to the Falkland Islands government, the referendum is meant to "send a firm message to Argentinian president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner that islanders want to remain British".
The announcement comes a few days before the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of Falkland Islands' surrender on 14 June 1982.
On 2 April 1982 Argentine forces invaded the Falkland Islands, a small British Overseas Territory located some 300 miles from Argentina. In response, the UK sent a naval force and troops to reclaim the islands, in which they succeeded on June 14. The short but intense war resulted in the death of 255 British and some 650 Argentine forces.
The Falkland Islands have a population of around 3000 inhabitants.
