|
The US extends by one year the sanctions against Belarus due to the country government's continued actions against the development of democratic governance and respect for human rights in the country.
The move, announced by President Barack Obama, will keep in force sanctions against Belarus that were initially imposed in 2006 by George W. Bush.
According to Obama, Minsk's government continued, in 2011, with its harsh actions against political opposition, civilians and independent media.
The US sanctions are additional to those imposed by the EU. The EU has been aiming to pressure the authoritarian regime of President Alexander Lukashenko to respect the human rights.
