Four pages of a 7th century book of advice targeting nuns are auctioned.
The book presents certain concerns of senior clerics over the behaviour of some of Barking Abbey's nuns, especially concerning the opposite sex.
It also advises nuns to dress appropriately, adding that garments that 'set off' the body should be avoided, after which it gives pointers to girls on the benefits of virginity and ways to avoid the sin of pride.
Written in Latin and inscribed on vellum, it is the very first known text from England to be aimed at a female readership.
The pages are auctioned at Sotheby's and expected to fetch £500,000.
