The annual gay parade Sofia Pride marches on the streets of the Bulgarian capital.
The ambassadors of Germany, the UK, the US, Austria, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Argentina, Serbia and France are backing up the event as they believe it is an excellent opportunity to promote LGBT rights and tolerance. The ambassadors also hope the parade will be a celebration of diversity and condemning homophobia.
The parade was held for the first time on 28 June, 2008. This matches with the date of the Stonewall riots that took place in New York City in 1969, in which the gay community in the US first fought back against government-sponsored persecution of homosexuals.
The first LGBT rights non-profit organisation to be found in Bulgaria is BGO Gemini. The main organisation at the moment is Action.
