Russia's Foreign Minister attends conference on Syria

Russia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrov, attends an international conference on Syria, which is likely to take place on June 30, just few days after the country's President, Bashar al-Assad, said his country was in a "state of war."
On June 26, Assad told members of his cabinet ", We live in a real state of war from all angles. When we are in a war, all policies and all sides and all sectors need to be directed at winning this war."

The objective of the meeting of Syria Contact Group is to come up with a plan on how to restore the peace plan proposed by Kofi Annan, the UN Special Envoy to Syria, in April 2012.
Moscow agreed to participate in the meeting but it has insisted that Iran will also be allowed to attend. The move is, however, opposed by the US and its allies.
