UN extends peacekeeping mission in South Sudan

The UN Security council extends its peacekeeping mission (UNMISS) in South Sudan for another year.
The mission was established in July 2011 after South Sudan seceded from Sudan following the decades of civil war, which resulted in the death of more than two million people.
The decision to extend the mission came amid the intensified border clashes since April 2012 due to unresolved territory, national debt and oil issues between the two states.
UN chief Ban Ki-Moon warned that it was crucial for the future of South Sudan to develop good relationship with former civil war foe.
"South Sudan and the Sudan currently stand at a crossroads and this is a defining moment for both countries. The establishment of good neighborly relations with Khartoum would make it easier for South Sudan to deal with its challenges more effectively," he said at July 2012 UN Security Council session.
