The European Commission adopts a proposal to improve the EU's criminal law in order to protect the finances of the EU Member States.
The objective of the changes is to protect EU taxpayers, deter fraudsters, and strengthen the prosecution and punishment of crimes against the EU budget. The plan should also facilitate the recovery of misused EU funds.
The criminal law improvements will implement the proposal for the establishment of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, which should be presented in 2013. The purpose of the office will be to bring perpetrators of crimes against the EU budget to justice.
