The council urged the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities to continue discussions aimed at reunifying the divided Mediterranean island nation.
The mission had already been extended on 19 July 2012, after a new resolution was adopted by a vote of 13 in favour and two abstentions from Azerbaijan and Pakistan.
The UN urged the implementation of confidence-building measures by demanding leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities to improve the public atmosphere in which negotiations have been taking place.
The UN also wished to see the civil society's participation in the negotiation process increasing.
UNFICYP was initially established to prevent new violence between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities. As of 1974, it has been supervising the established ceasefire and buffer zone on the disputed island. UNFICYP's mandate has also included humanitarian activities.
