EU and IMF on assessment mission in Romania

On the day that the mission was announced, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso gave Prime Minister Ponta a list of steps that are to be taken if Romania is to continue with its eurozone integration process.
The country's political crisis was sparked by Prime Minister Ponta's campaign against his conservative rival, President Traian Basescu, who was suspended from his position on July 6 following a parliamentary vote.
During the visit, Mignon will hold talks with both Prime Minister Victor Ponta and the country's suspended President Traian Basescu to review the political situation in the country.
The mission was initially set to arrive in Romania on July 18 but was postponed until after the country's referendum in which Romanian voters got to decide whether or not to impeach their president.
