The measure is part of Barcelona's municipal government's plan to promote cycling in Barcelona for whose implementation the authorities have earmarked 5 million euros to be spent over the next two years and a half.
According to the city's Councillor for Mobility, Eduard Freixedes, the plan will focus on improving the city's infrastructure, as well as create new lanes and fix existing ones and improve the safety conditions of various intersections.
Barcelona's cycling program, "Bicing", was inaugurated on 22 March 2007, launching over 400 bicycle stations to lend and return 6000 city bikes.
