Michelle Martin, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2004 for assisting her husband Marc Dutroux in the abuse and murder of eight young girls, is to be released following a Belgian Court of Cassation order on August 28.
Even though Michelle is technically free to leave prison, she is likely to give the country some time to adjust to the ruling.
Sixteen years after the initial arrest of the couple, the Dutroux case continues to enfuriate many Belgians, with public sentiment over the case running high.
Martin conspired to keep several eight-year-olds captive in their basement in Marcinelle, Belgium, where they were abused and starved. Dutroux himself was sentenced to life.
A Belgian convent has agreed to take Martin in following her release. According to Martin's lawyer, "they accepted her because their vocation is to welcome people nobody wants."
