Jared Loughner appears in court where he will be handed a life sentence without parole for attempting to assessinate US congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and killing six bystanders in the process.
Loughner, 23, pleaded guilty to 19 charges amongst which is included the attempted assassination of Giffords, who was shot in the head at close range whilst meeting with constituents in Tucson, Arizona.
According to the prosecution, Loughner suffers from schizophrenia and delusions. At a hearing on August 7, Loughner expressed regret for his actions, saying "I hurt people. I hurt my mom and dad. I wished I'd never had those thoughts".
Giffords was forced to resign from her position in January 2012 to focus on her recovery.
