A Czech Republic law banning smoking in restaurants comes into effect. Under the previous law, restaurants were free to decide whether to permit smoking inside their venue.
The proposal to implement the toughest law on smoking in a public place was presented to the Czech parliament in August 2012. According to a survey, it was favored by seventy eight percent of Czechs.
The new law also prohibits smoking in beer gardens with a roof even though lighting a cigarette in a roofless beer garden is still allowed.
