Many Kenyans are keen to vote out certain parliamentarians whom they regard as corrupt. Parliament voted to increase members' salaries by 400% as their first move after the 2003 election, and subsequently exempted themselves from paying tax. Riots after the 2007 election killed more than 1,220 people.
The Kenyan government tried to delay the election until December 2013, citing logistical difficulties, but the High Court ruled in January 2012 that elections must be held sixty days after the end of the five-year parliamentary term (on January 14).
In Kenya's National Assembly (Bunge), there are 210 members elected by plurality vote in single-member constituencies, 12 members are nominees appointed by the president, and 2 members are reserved ex officio.
