Mandate of UN mission in Golan heights expires

|
The mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) is scheduled to expire. However, it is likely that the mandate will be extended again.
UNDOF was established by the Security Council with resolution 350 in 1974, after the Yom Kippur War. Its purpose was to maintain and oversee a ceasefire between Israel and Syria in the Golan heights. Since that time, the mandate has been extended every six months. UN leaders considered that the UNDOF presence is essential, in view of continued tension in the region.
