The mandate of the United Nations Office in Burundi (BNUB) expires. It is likely however that the duration of the mandate is extended.


In January 2011, the UN decided that BNUB would replace its Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB) for an initial period of one year. The main role of BNUB is to bring Burundi's government and other institutions into line with international standards, improve the functioning of the justice system and public finance, and promote reconciliation in Burundi society, with respect for human rights. 


The Burundi civil war between Hutu and Tutsi tribes, in which hundreds of thousands of people were killed, lasted from 1993 to 2005.
