Mandate for UN mission in Libya expires

The mandate for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expires. Most likely, the mandate is renewed.
UNSMIL was established by the UN Security Council with resolution 2009 in September 2011, initially for three months. The mandate was subsequently extended. Its main task has been to help restore a police force and government services, help organize elections, protect human rights and assist economic recovery.
UNSMIL chief Ian Martin explained on 6 August that "both Libyans and the international community are going to have to realize that building a state out of a legacy of 42 years of a regime that deliberately didn’t develop the institutions of a modern democracy is not a quick task."
