Mandate for UN mission in the Western Sahara expires

The mandate for the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) expires.
The UN Security Council established MINURSO in April 1991 with resolution 690, to oversee the ceasefire between Morocco and the Frente POLISARIO, and organize a referendum in which Western Sahara's population can choose for national independence or integration with Morocco.
However, because of persistent quarrels about voter registration and election lists, and although the mandate was extended numerous times, no referendum has actually been held yet, and there have been calls to abandon the mission for lack of success.
