Mandate for UN force in the Congo expires

The mandate for the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) expires.
MONUSCO is mainly a large UN military and police force, initiated by the Security Council in 1999, which is charged with keeping the peace, protecting human rights, and helping the Congolese government with law enforcement.
In May 2011, the Congolese government expressed its wish for an "orderly, progressive withdrawal" of MONUSCO, as relations with neighboring countries had been normalized and rebel forces were reduced to a "few isolated zones", but very likely the UN military presence will remain for some time, and assist with the 2013 Congolese elections.
