The mandate of the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) expires.
One day before 9 July 2011, when South Sudan became the youngest country in the world, the Security Council established UNMISS for a one-year period. The mandate was extended for another year.
UNMISS has a military staff of up to 7,000, a 900-strong police force, as well as a civilian component. It is charged with keeping the peace, protecting human rights and helping to establish the new state authority.
