Mandate for UN office in Somalia expires

The mandate of the United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) expires.
The UN General Secretary originally established UNPOS in Somalia in April 1995, to act as a liaison office on the ground, which maintains contact with Somali leaders, civic groups and representatives of foreign countries in the region.
On 1 August 2012, Somalia's transitional government adopted a new constitution, as the legal basis for a new government authority as well as elections for a new parliament, and the role of UNPOS could continue.
