Britain's Olympians and Paralympians get their own honours list, which recognizes the individuals' personal bravery, achievement, or service to the UK. Previously, former Olympians were only included in the New Year's Honours.
The change to the usual system, announced by British Prime Minister David Cameron, has to do with the outstanding success of British athletes at both the Olympic and Paralympic London games.
Following the Olympic games, rumors were that some of Britain's Olympic heroes would miss out on honors under the normal Whitehall rules, according to which one athlete is awarded a knighthood, with four Commanders, 68 Officers and 134 Members of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
Despite the change in the rules, the Honours will be decided by a Whitehall committee, not the government.
