Austria holds referendum on military service

"There will be a referendum to decide whether there will be compulsory military service, a modern compulsory military service, or a professional military," announced Deputy Chancellor Michael Spindelegger in September 2012.
Currently, Australian men aged up to 35 are eligible for a half-year long military service or, alternatively, civilian service.
In the referendum the Austrians will decide whether to maintain the present system or to introduce a professional army and a year-long voluntary paid civilian service.
