Aung San Suu Kyi visits United States

Aung San Suu Kyi, a leader of the National League for Democracy in Burma who is famous for her democratic rights campaigns, visits the US.
Her schedule includes seven speaking engagements - in Washington DC, New York, Kentucky, Indiana and California. In Washington, she will receive the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award in the US. In New York, she will receive the Global Citizen Award from the Atlantic Council think-tank.
It is the first time that Suu Kyi has been able to visit the US again since she was placed under house arrest by the Burmese military junta in 1990. She lived in New York in 1969-71 when she worked for the secretariat of the UN.
