Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey visits Ankara for the first time whilst in office to meet his Turkish counterpart General Necdet Özel.
The generals will discuss the deepening instability in Syria and cooperation on tackling regional issues.
Turkey has been increasing its calls for NATO to establish safe zones inside Syria to help lift the burden of an estimated 80,000 refugees that have fled to Turkey.
Dempsey's trip follows two unannounced visits by CIA Director David Petraeus to Turkey in the past six months.
