US General John Allen is appointed the new NATO Supreme Allied Commander in Europe. The general was nominated for the position by US President Barack Obama.
Gen Allen has been responsible for the alliance's Afghanistan campaign since July 2011 and played a vital part in countering the Iraq insurgency between 2006 and 2008.
Having commanded coalition troops from 50 countries, the general is believed to have sufficient experience to handle the politically sensitive and sometimes conflicting wishes of NATO's 28 member states.
Supreme Allied Commander is the title held by the highest ranking military officer within a military alliance.
