American actor Tom Hanks makes his debut on Broadway in Nora Ephron's play Lucky Guy, directed by George C. Wolfe. 


Hanks plays a charismatic and controversial New York City newspaper columnist Mike McAlary in his stage biography.


McAlary, who worked at the New York Daily News for 12 years, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1998 for an article exposing the New York police torture of Haitan immigrant Abner Louima. Few months later, the journalist died of colon cancer at the age of 41.  


The author of the play, who gained recognition with films such as When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle, died on June 26, 2012, after the talks started on casting Hanks in the play. 


Following Ephron's death, the lead producer of the play's Broadway adaptation said that his team could "think of no more fitting tribute to her extraordinary writing and remarkable body of work" than to proceed with producing Lucky Guy.
