The Football Association (FA) chairman David Bernstein resigns from the post on his 70th birthday. 


Bernstein made no secret of his wish to remain in office until after the 2014 World Cup, but was forced to stand down by the FA Council that ruled it would be "inappropriate to change known and agreed rules on an individual basis".


The decision means that the FA will appoint a new chairman and host both the Champions League Final at Wembley and the UEFA congress in a single month to celebrate the association's 150th birthday.
