Egypt Supreme Court rules on legality of constitutional panel after delay

The Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt rules on the legality of the Islamist-dominated constitutional panel, which was responsible for drafting the post-revolutionary Egyptian charter.

The case, seeking the panel's dissolution, was referred to the country's independent judiciary body by an Egyptian administrative court on October 23, 2012, in a move that was seen as yet another obstacle in Egypt's path to democracy.  

The ruling had originally been scheduled for December 2, 2012, but was delayed after Islamist supporters of President Mohamed Mursi surrounded the court forcing the judges, who could not enter the building, to suspend their work. 

The later ruling date, February 3, 2012, was cancelled due to violent anti-Mursi protests held two days prior to the expected verdict.
