The Academy of Country Music Awards pays tribute to emerging and popular American country music artists.

The Academy hosted its first country music awards show in 1965 honoring the American country music accomplishments during the previous year. First held in Los Angeles, winners that year included Kay Adams, Merle Haggard, Bonnie Owens and Buck Owens.


The Country Music Association itself was founded in 1958, based in Nashville at the time with the aim of promoting country music.
