China starts phasing out the use of organs from executed prisoners for transplants, as it begins implementing its new national donation system.
In early November 2012, Chinese officials acknowledged the system run by the Red Cross Society of China, which has been using mostly organs from death-row prisoners, is both unethical and unsustainable.
"Now there is consensus among China's transplant community that the new system will relinquish the reliance on organs from executed convicts," said Chinese Health Ministry-appointed official Wang Haibo.
The announcement was welcomed by international health and human rights groups.
China will reportedly completely abolish the transplantation of executed prisoners' organs within five years.
