UK govt officials test new decision-making app

British government officials are to test a new application designed to assist them with their decision-making and daily affairs.
The application software, developed by the Cabinet Office's digital team, gathers information from social media to determine public opinion on matters of government importance.
The working title of 'Number 10 Dashboard' reflects the intention of the development team to present a "data visualisation dashboard to provide ministers and civil servants with information on key public services as well as other indicators".
The information presented includes data from the Office of National Statistics, in addition to showing online levels of activity around key words such as 'mortgage' and 'loans'.
Prime Minister David Cameron participated in the trial phase of the application last year, before it was deemed suitable for wider use amongst government officials.
Critics have raised questions regarding the government use of data stemming from social media, with some arguing this could lead to a more 'reactive' government.
