French parliament debates gay marriage and adoption
|
|
The French parliament debates whether to pass a bill legalising same-sex marriage and adoption.
Although France already allows civil unions between same-sex partners, only married couples can legally enter into the adoption process.
President Francoise Hollande's government has approved the bill in a move that seems to show he intends to follow up on his campaign promise to secure more rights for gays.
Nonetheles, there might be strong conflicts of opinion within parliament, given that 1,000 mayors have voiced their opposition to the changes since last year and senator Serge Dassault has declared the bill to be "an enormous danger to the nation".
