US President Barack Obama might travel to Pakistan on a first visit since he took office in 2008. The US president was scheduled to visit Pakistan last year, but despite "being committed to visiting Pakistan in 2011," as stated by White House, the visit was canceled. Instead, the US president made trips to China and India and visited Afghanistan twice.

At an earlier date, sometime in the last week of December, Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf might meet Barack Obama in New York before the UN Security Council. The PM's visit was set as his country is scheduled to gain a seat on the UN Security Council (UNSC) on January 1 2013. The seat at the Security Council was previously occupied by Lebanon.

Relationships between the two countries have been tense recently, due to US employing drones to fight and take down terrorist suspects in the tribal regions of Pakistan. Despite attaining positive results, the unmanned combat vehicles have caused the death of several unarmed civilians and have caused tensions between the two sides to rise.
