Australia launches child sex abuse inquiry

An inquiry is launched into an alleged police cover-up of child abuse at a New South Wales church.
Late 2012, a senior New South Wales police investigator aired claims of an extensive cover-up among clergy and officials wishing to protect paedophile priests from public scrutiny.
Faced with public outrage at the extent of the scandal, in November 2012 Prime Minister Julia Gillard set up a royal commission into institutional responses to instances of child sexual abuse.
Although the scandal involves the church, Gillard said the inquiry would be wider in its scope and would look into instances of abuse across society.
Upon the announcement of the inquiry, Sydney Archbishop George Pell said he welcomed the investigation as an opportunity to clear the church's name.
"Public opinion remains unconvinced that the Catholic Church has dealt adequately with sexual abuse", the Cardinal said in a statement.
