The Scottish football Premier League's (SPL) independent commission is set to examine alleged undisclosed payments to Rangers players.
The commission will look into Employee Benefit Trusts used in the past to pay players. The trusts were used to transfer money which the SPL claims was not declared to them. If found guilty, Rangers could be stripped of titles.
Rangers stated that it believed it was not necessary under the rules to declare the payments as they considered them to be loans and not compensation for playing football.
Speaking about the SPL investigation at a pre-match press conference, Rangers manager Ally McCoist said: "I would be extremely hopeful that common sense would now prevail and they would drop it."
"That would be the ideal situation and we could all start moving forward again. All we want is an opportunity to start again and move forward."
Rangers, which failed to pay its bills, found itself voted out of the premier league, a decision which sent the club straight to Scotland's third division. The decision of the SPL committee could be another blow to the club and its fans after a difficult year.
