Israel's Defence Minister Ehud Barak is set to quit politics after the new Israeli government is sworn in. The move sees the end of a long career in Israel's military and political establishment.


Barak served in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for 39 years, where he became the Chief of General Staff. After a few years, he joined the country's political system as

Yitzhak Rabin's Interior Minister and later was appointed as the Foreign Minister in Shimon Peres' government. 


After defeating Benjamin Netanyahu in the 1999 elections, he led the IDF to withdraw from southern Lebanon. He is also remembered to be the leader who resumed negotiations with the Palestinian Liberation Organization, which resulted in the failed talks at 2000 Camp David Summit. A few months later, Second Intifada broke, which brought an end to Barak's future as a Prime Minister.
