Created in 1954 by television executive Paul Fox, the award has grown into one of the major events in UK sports. During the ceremony a number of eight awards are presented to outstanding sports personalities chosen by public vote.
The eight categories are : BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, BBC Overseas Personality of The Year, BBC Sports Personality Team of The Year Award, BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award, BBC Sports Personality of the Year Coach Award, BBC Sports Personality of the Year Helen Rollason Award, BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year and The BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award.
The winner of the main award is presented with a trophy representing a four-turret lens camera, while the winners of other categories receive smaller replicas of the main trophy.
Between the year of its creation and 2005 the awards ceremony was held in London. Starting with 2006 the show was hosted by several venues across the UK, in Liverpool, Sheffield or Birmingham.
