Hirst is famous for his preserved animals and diamond-encrusted skull work and was the subject of a Tate Modern show in 2012. Joseph said that to have Hirst design the statuette would "make winning a 2013 Brit an even more special proposition".
The controversial artist will follow on from Sir Peter Blake and fashion designer Dame Vivienne Westwood, who have designed the statue since the 'black canvas' trophy was introduced in 2011.
