Hungarian opposition plan alliance talks

A Hungarian opposition umbrella group starts negotiations with the country's largest opposition party to form an alliance to defeat Prime Minister Viktor Orban in the 2014 elections.
The Socialist opposition party says it will consider a plan to "build a new democratic system." The statement also said that the aim of the talks is "to name common candidates and then a common party list that provides a democratic alternative to oust the current regime."
The opposition umbrella group, Egyutt 2014, led by former Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai, stated that "basic principles and ethical standards" must be established before the start of discussions to "rebuild the rule of law."
The move is an attempt to gain momentum to roll back against Orban's consolidation of power, including a new constitution, a new media regulator appointed by the ruling Fidesz party and a narrowing Constitutional Court jurisdiction.
