US President Barack Obama decides on the size of US troops in Afghanistan after the mandate of ISAF expires at the end of 2014.

According to officials, Obama is considering to keep 6,000 to 10,000 troops in Afghanistan. Currently, about 66,000 US troops are stationed in the war-torn country.

After 2014, the US military mission is expected to focus on counterterrorism and advising the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).

NATO will fully transfer the security responsibility in Afghanistan to ANSF after the mandate of the International Security Assistance Force expires. ISAF has been preparing the ANSF for its tasks over the last couple of years.
