The two probes, each about the size of a small washing machine, will probably hit a mountain near the moon's north pole. The site has been carefully selected in order to avoid the chance of hitting any of the Apollo or other lunar relics.
The impacts of the crashes will not be visible from Earth. As the region will be dark at the time of the crashes, no good pictures from NASA's close-by spacecraft Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter are expected to be made.
The mission of the GRaIL spacecraft resulted in the discovery of lava-filled subterranean cracks inside the moon, which can explain an early expansion of the body.
