Illinois Senate may consider same-sex marriage bill

Rep. Greg Harris and Sen. Heather Steans refused to share the status of roll-call votes in each chamber. However, Harris has previously said he would not bring a bill to the floor without assurances that there are enough votes to pass it.
"We're in striking distance of being able to get it done," Stearns said.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel calls the proposed bill a legislative priority. A poll for Southern Illinois University in September found 44 percent of Illinois voters support same-sex marriage, up by 10 percent from just two years earlier.
If passed, Illinois would join Maryland, Washington State and Maine to allow same-sex marriage in the past few months and would raise the figure of US states allowing gay marriage to ten in total.
The bill mentions that places of worship would not be forced to conduct same-sex marriage ceremonies.
