French actor and filmmaker Gerard Depardieu renounces French citizenship and becomes a Russian citizen. 


Depardieu received criticism for looking to permanently relocate to Russia to allegedly avoid paying increased income taxes in his home country. The actors original plan was to become Belgium citizen but French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault scolded his "pathetic" decision to become a tax exile in Belgium. 


The actor, who is known for his passionate temperament, lashed out at the minister stating that in the whole of his career he has paid over 145 million euros in taxes. 


According to observers, the French authorities might be concerned that an exodus of wealthy citizens sends out the wrong message to the foreign investors the country is hoping to attract.
